This international symposium on Atomic, Cluster and Surface Physics, SASP, is one in a continuing biennial series of conferences founded in 1978 by members of the Institute for Ion Physics and Applied Physics of the University of Innsbruck, Austria. The last SASP was held in 2010 in Obergurgl, Austria. SASP symposia aim to promote the growth of scientific knowledge and effective exchange of information among scientists in the fields of atomic, molecular, cluster and surface physics stressing both fundamental concepts and applications across these areas of interdisciplinary science. Five scientific themes have been chosen for SASP 2012:
- Astrophysics and astrochemistry
- Clusters, aggregates, aerosols, ices
- Ions, collisions, dynamics, spectroscopy
- Surface science, catalysis
- Energy: production, storage
The symposium format is similar to a Gordon Conference, with invited lectures, some hot topics, posters and ample time for discussion. There will be 20 and 30 min invited expert lectures covering recent advances in the topics of the Symposium together with some hot topics. See the list of confirmed invited lecturers and hot topic lectures.
Contributed papers will be presented in two poster sessions. These poster sessions provide the main forum for presentation of new work and for discussion of recent progress. Prior to the official poster sessions there will be introductory sessions, which will give the authors of each contributed paper the opportunity to present orally highlights of their work presented on the poster in a one minute overview (1 to 2 viewgraphs!). A few of these contributions will also be selected for oral presentation as Hot Topics.
Conference Dates and Location
The 18th SASP will be held in the Conference Center (Palais des Congrès) de l’Alpe d’Huez and accommodations will be in Hôtel du Pic Blanc, a three star hotel located at about 10 mn walk from the Conference Center. Alpe d’Huez is one of the most famous ski resorts of the French Alps. It is situated at an altitude of 1860m on the southern flank of the Grandes Rousses Massif. Also called “The Island in the Sunshine”, this resort enjoys long periods of sunshine (an average of 300 sunny days per year) and a particularly active microclimate. It proposes a large number of skiing and non-skiing activities, such as for example “the Sarenne”, the longest run in the world with a length of 16 km that guarantees a long-time skiing pleasure... Alpe d’Huez can be reached by public transportation (bus) from Grenoble but easy access will be provided by a shuttle service from and to Grenoble (Lyon St Exupéry airport and Grenoble train station), organized at the beginning and end of the conference for the registered participants.
SASP will start on the evening of Sunday, January 22 (afternoon for early stage researchers) with registration, dinner and a first evening lecture and will end on the morning of Friday, January 27, 2012 after breakfast. Lectures will be held in morning and afternoon sessions and the lunch break will be free for discussion, reading or recreation. The participants will be accommodated in Hôtel du Pic Blanc, a three star hotel located at about 10 mn walk from the Conference Center. This hotel is offers direct acces to the ski-runs and is equipped with wireless connections and a fitness centre including swimming pool, sauna, spa, cardi-fitness, gym. Dinners will be organized in the Hôtel du Pic Blanc.
